Taya Smith, the globally renowned vocalist known for her association with Hillsong Church and UNITED, has made the decision to resign from Hillsong Church after a significant and impactful tenure.
Taya’s musical journey began when she lent her distinctive voice to UNITED’s worship anthem “Oceans (Where Feet May Fail),” a song that reached remarkable heights, including an impressive 61 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Christian Songs Chart. Her captivating vocals quickly became synonymous with worship on a global scale.
During her time with UNITED and Hillsong Worship, Taya played an essential role in helping to amass over 1 billion career streams worldwide. She also had the privilege of performing live for more than 10 million people in 12 different countries across six continents.
Reflecting on her departure, Taya shared, “It’s not lost on me that last week, the same day the Ocean tracks from the Zion (X) 10 Year Anniversary Album came out was the day, after 10 years on staff and 13 years of calling this house home, I handed in my resignation at Hillsong Church.” Her departure came as a profound and unexpected change in her life’s journey.
Taya’s journey with Hillsong began in February 2013, and she witnessed incredible growth and success, including the swift ascent of “Zion.” Her contributions to worship music have touched the lives of countless individuals, serving as a vessel to draw people closer to their faith.
Despite the challenges and mixed emotions that marked her departure, Taya expressed gratitude for the past decade. She shared, “The last 10 years have been a love gift to the Lord, and in true Jesus style, He has given me more than anything I ever poured out or gave.”
Taya’s decision to leave Hillsong Church marks a significant chapter in her life, and her musical journey continues to be a source of inspiration for many who have been touched by her voice and devotion to worship.
Why did Taya leave Hillsong?
Taya’s resignation from Hillsong Church has been met with curiosity, as she did not disclose the personal reasons behind her decision. Her debut self-titled album, released in March 2022, marked a significant milestone in her musical career.
It’s worth noting that Hillsong Church has recently been in the global spotlight due to co-founder Brian Houston’s resignation in 2022. This followed allegations of misconduct involving two women. Additionally, Houston faced a legal charge of failing to report his father’s sexual abuse of a child, although he was recently acquitted of this charge. These events have garnered significant attention and raised questions about the church’s leadership and the broader issues it faces.
