The hymn “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus” holds a remarkable story that every Christian should know. This powerful testimony is a testament to unwavering faith even in the face of persecution. Persecution Relief, in collaboration with renowned worship leaders including Zanbeni Prasad, Alwin Thomas, Cameron Mendes, and others, pays tribute to the families of Christian martyrs in India through a multilingual rendition of this hymn. Witness this beautiful tribute below.

A Hymn of Origin and Resilience

Originating from India, the lyrics of the hymn trace back to the final words of Nokseng, a man from the Garo tribe in Assam. Today, it serves as the song of the Garo people and stands as an anthem for those facing persecution.

While this hymn is familiar in church services, especially during baptism ceremonies, few are aware of the incredible story behind it.

The Influence of Missionaries and Revival

The origins of turning these words into a hymn are attributed to Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh and Simon Marak from Jorhat, Assam. The story of this song is also recounted in Dr. P.P. Job’s book “Why God Why?”

Around 150 years ago, the Welsh Revival birthed numerous missionaries, and this movement eventually brought the gospel to Northeast India. This region, then in Assam, was home to fierce tribes known as head-hunters.

A True Tale of Faith and Sacrifice

Despite fierce opposition, missionaries shared the gospel with these tribes. Nokseng, along with his wife and two children, accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Many villagers followed suit.

Angered by their conversion, the village chief demanded Nokseng renounce his faith or face death. Moved by the Holy Spirit, Nokseng declared, “I have decided to follow Jesus. No turning back, no turning back.”

The chief ordered the execution of Nokseng’s children, followed by his wife. Still, Nokseng stood firm, proclaiming, “Though no one joins me, still I will follow. No turning back, no turning back.”

As Nokseng and his family were tragically shot, a revival ignited in the village, starting with the chief himself. The chief’s heart was touched by their faith, and he too surrendered to Christ. This act of faith inspired the entire village to embrace Christianity.

Publishing and Popularity

William J. Reynolds, a Baptist hymnologist, discovered the song in 1958. He arranged the melody, and it was published in the Assembly Songbook (Nashville, 1959). The tune ASSAM was included in Christian Praise, gaining popularity after its designation.

The true story behind the hymn, once unknown, now shines a light on its significance.

An Anthem for Persecution and Faith

The story of “I Have Decided To Follow Jesus” reflects the transformative power of faith. One man’s unwavering commitment impacted millions worldwide, turning hearts to Jesus Christ. As the church in India commemorates the Kandhamal riots this August, this hymn has become an anthem for those facing persecution.

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” (Philippians 1:21)

I Have Decided To Follow Jesus Lyrics:

  1. I have decided to follow Jesus;
    I have decided to follow Jesus;
    I have decided to follow Jesus;
    No turning back, no turning back.
  2. The world behind me, the cross before me;
    The world behind me, the cross before me;
    The world behind me, the cross before me;
    No turning back, no turning back.
  3. Though none go with me, still I will follow;
    Though none go with me, still I will follow;
    Though none go with me, still I will follow;
    No turning back, no turning back.
  4. My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
    My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
    My cross I’ll carry, till I see Jesus;
    No turning back, no turning back.
  5. Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
    Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
    Will you decide now to follow Jesus?
    No turning back, no turning back.
